She's stubborn and she stews and she has all the drive that makes her a good attorney, but when she tries to handle that drive in the rest of her life, she only seems to make a mess of things. She wants to hold on to her sister's memory and fire but the more she tries, the more she feels like things are slipping away from her. She can't leave her sister dead and buried in the ground, not when she deserves to be alive.
She deserves more of a life than the one she lived and if Laurel has to trade the life she has to give her that, then she'll do it, no matter the cost. She never imagined, however, that the cost would be Thea. Thea is a cost she also isn't willing to pay and she doesn't know how to save them both.
That's probably the point. She can't have it both ways, and it isn't fair to sacrifice the living for someone who's already dead. She stays in Thea's hospital room and waits with her, and while she isn't sure if she's waiting for Sara or trying to protect Thea, the point remains that she isn't going anywhere.
She's not losing anyone else. Not if she can help it.]

let me know if this doesn't work!
(Her father also agreed with Oliver. They should both know by now that is a sure way to get Laurel to continue to do something, but that's a matter for another time.)
Fact of the matter is, she didn't trust Gotham PD not to cut her suspect loose, and she doesn't trust SCPD not to do what needs to get done without the proper motivation. If a very cranky ADA insists on tagging along, there's no way either police force won't play ball, and if that cranky ADA just so happens to be your captain's only living (as far as they know) daughter, then you aren't about to let anything happen to them.
Besides, Laurel can more than take care of herself.
True to form, Laurel finds herself getting "mugged" by some dangerous men, one of which pulled a knife before the words "give me your purse" even left his lips. Fortunately for Laurel, this was an enemy of ADA Laurel Lance, not an enemy of the Black Canary. The look of surprise that crossed the man's face when she easily disarmed him and knocked him to the ground in two swift moves was probably worth the hassle in the first place. His friends were a little harder to take down, as they were a little more prepared but still they end up in a heap on the ground of an alley, while Laurel is still standing with bloody knuckles and mud on her suit.
She's clearly more upset about her suit than she is about the blood.]

i woke up and realized i needed this in my life
i'm gonna just ... roll back the clock a lot, if this doesn't work let me know
Tommy who lost his best friend, Tommy who is trying so hard to keep himself (and her) together in spite of it. Tommy, who she didn't realize was more than a smile and a nice suit until Oliver was gone and Tommy became more than a way to find a good time.
(Part of her wants to know if he knew about Oliver and Sara. Part of her wants to ask how many other women there were, because if Oliver was self-centered enough to sleep with her sister, how hard would it have been for him to sleep with other people. Part of her wants to ask if it's okay that she still loves them, both of them, despite this, and if that's the case she would forgive them both, so long as it meant they were both alive again, but a lot of the time, she comes to the conclusion that those aren't questions she wants the answers to.)
It's Tommy that convinces her that she needs a break - from her dad's drinking, from her mother's valiant search efforts, from the way that their marriage is falling apart right in front of her. Laurel is so reluctant to leave, worries that if she looks away for more than a second, one or both of them will disappear, but it's been six months since the Queen's Gambit went down, she's on a break from law school, and in a lot of ways, Tommy is right. She can't control the world by staring it down and forcing it to change, much as she may want to. She needs to take care of herself every once in a while, and one week in New York City isn't going to break her family.
But after three days of clubbing and nonstop noise, she's decided to take a quieter approach tonight, and let Tommy go out and have his fun while she takes her dinner at a quiet little bar that reminds her of her dad's favorite place back home. She's perched on a bar stool with a burger and a beer, watching as the news scrolls by on the screen:
- still no word as to what SHIELD located in the Artctic, though rumors are circulating that it may have been the final remnants of the Valkyrie, the plane in which Captain America was lost in 1945. This was one of the turning points of the war, and hopefully will contain more answers of what happened to one of the heroes of the war.
In other news, the occupants of the Queen's Gambit, including technology mogul Robert Queen and his son Oliver, were declared legally dead today, after a six month search for any signs of life has come up empty -
The words come so sharp and fast that she fights the urge to jerk in her seat, before she looks up at the bartender and quietly asks:]
Would you mind changing the channel?
[It's overwrought, too emotional, and she swallows before continuing.]
I think there's a game on. The Yankees or something?

[ Medically speaking, Dinah Laurel Lance was dead. For two months, eleven days, and eighteen hours, that was true, but she woke up all the same in a white room with geometric shapes in relief on the walls, a rolling night table, and a giant screen that took up one of the walls almost entirely. Standing at the side of the bed was a woman in black, hair cropped short, muttering under her breath with a white woman who was still out of focus. ]
She's gonna be freaked out. Trust me. I've done intake before; if I can tell someone they're part alien, I can handle this. [ Daisy with the short hair glanced back at where Laurel stirred, then assessed the other woman with her. ] Hurry, I think she's waking up.
[ Dr. Radcliffe's system was ... experimental, to say the least—not only because android technology was in its nascent stages still, but also because downloading the memories from an already dead brain was a little like downloading files from a fried hard drive. That's the analogy Fitz had offered her, anyway, just before he'd eagerly announced that he'd managed it and that Laurel should (operative word) be fine. Still, Daisy was tasked with evaluation and intake for what would potentially be the first LMD agent that the Secret Warriors might have. ]
Laurel? Can you hear me? [ She approached the bed. ] How are you feeling?
no subject
She just got stabbed, after all.
Her eyes open as she stares up into the brightness of the ceiling, trying to focus and figure out what's going on.]

He shows up in Star City a little worse for wear. He did fight with aliens recently and to the surprise of no one he's incredibly cheap. His journey was rougher than it needed to be in order to keep the costs down.
He still greets her with a smile despite his self-imposed hardships once they meet up at the airport.] Laurel. [He nods respectfully, shouldering a small carry on bag.] It's good to see you again.
no subject
[And she will make her way closer to greet him, holding her arms out for a hug because Laurel is a very huggy person and it's been a while since she's seen him. Also, she's glad he survived an alien attack.
So hugging is happening, deal with it Steve.]

Sara finally deemed it safe to return her from the Waverider, all the places that she thought she would have the chance to go back to were filled by other people. There was a new Black Canary, a new DA and no room for Laurel to slip back in. She can't blame them for moving on - they didn't know what Sara had done - but that does leave not a lot left for her to stay for in Star City.
Moving across the country might be a little extreme, but she's been desperately in need of a fresh start for a long time. Now is as good a time as any to get started. The fact that she wound up in another city full of masks is just a coincidence that she's choosing (for now) to ignore. Oliver and the current DA, Adrian Chase, helped her get her identity back. She got a job at a small little firm in the city which spent more time helping people than worrying about their profit margins (her kind of firm, to be honest) and tries to get back into life as Laurel again, intending to put the Black Canary far behind her.
(The thing about that is that the things you don't know can never make that as easy as it sounds. Things Laurel doesn't know:
He sends his men to take her, bring her back to Lian Yu to die with the rest of her family, but the streets of Hell's Kitchen aren't safe and Laurel's always been smarter than she looks.
(Things that Prometheus Didn't Know:
Things Laurel Also Doesn't Know:
Prometheus' minions come for her with machine guns and body armor but that doesn't seem to bother her much. The minute she opens her mouth and sonic waves echo across the alleyway where they have her cornered, the hands around their guns falter, and she takes the opportunity where she has it. Her baton comes up and goes for the easy weaknesses - the knees, the elbows - but even with the element of surprise, there are still too many for her.
This was a lot easier when she wasn't alone. There are a few hard hits as one manages to cold cock her with the butt of his weapon and she goes down hard. She can taste blood in her mouth, and she spits it out before looking up at him with a glare.]
You're going to regret that.

Because, yes, she's grateful it's a small enough town that she can still practice law without it popping up on Damien Darhk or anyone else's radar, and yes, she's grateful that Constantine went out of his way to save her life and trusts his judgment on whether or not she'll actually be safe there, but there's always that nagging feeling that she should have asked for more information.
For the most part, Purgatory is nice. It's definitely got some characters (see: Wynnona Earp, see: "Henry") but nothing that she hasn't seen before. She's even somewhat catching up on some of the fun history of the town, but that nagging feeling is brought to fruition when she unintentionally gets caught in a revenant vs. heir showdown in the middle of the police station. While she holds her own she was not prepared for possessed ghosts. The startled expression that comes when Wynonna shoots them and they disappear isn't something that's going away anytime soon.
She holds up her hands, staring at the space for a moment, before whispering softly.]
What the fuck.
[Part of her wishes she still drank. She's not going to, because she feels like she needs to be sober to understand an explanation she's going to insist upon, but for the moment, she wishes she wasn't an alcoholic and is possibly going to swear until she feels better.]
i suck at writing starters, but i want a thing.
that's okay, i love writing starters <3
When Batman and Nightwing started working with Team Arrow, Laurel and Dick often wound up on the same assignments because Bruce and Oliver didn't trust each other, and Laurel and Dick actually got along well enough to get shit done. Then it turned into hanging out outside of vigilante shenanigans as friends, and then somehow turned into ... more.
Laurel isn't complaining - it's nice to actually have a personal life again - but if someone asked her to pinpoint where all of this started, she wouldn't really be able to tell them.
Today's "date," if they could even call it that, involves Laurel's couch after a rough case and streaming movies from Netflix and Amazon Prime.]
You're probably going to regret letting me pick the movie.

Barefoot. In her pjs.
This is fine. Fortunately she's in an empty hallway so she doesn't freak anyone out by appearing out of nowhere, but at the same time, she is very much not where she's supposed to be.]
Okay, Laurel. Time to ... figure this out.
[Upside, she does know how to contact her sister while she's in the time stream. Downside, that means she needs to find a computer, and again, she's lacking the proper pants. She glances back and forth over her shoulder for a moment, before starting to make her way down the hall slowly, poking around to see what she could find, and following the doors as they open until she finds herself ... right in front of a bridge full of people.
She blinks, then gives a small wave as she straightens.]

There are a lot of questions, but he hasn't said a word since the cops brought him in. So they've reached out to Laurel to grease the wheels a little. She seems to have a good track record with troubled vigilante types. Maybe she can get this one to confess to a murder.]
