[Dick is -- well, this is different, for him. before Laurel, he's only had one serious relationship, and that it didn't end so well. he and Barbara kind of dissolved, rather than imploded, but he's pretty sure Guilt and Issues Over the Girlfriend Suddenly Being Wheelchair-Bound kind of beats out any and all knock down, drag out break up arguments. it broke both their hearts. since then, Dick has kind of sworn off dating, racked up a whole lot of one night stands (all of which ended amicably, because he's Dick Grayson, and just because you sleep with someone doesn't mean you have to hate them, after, or never talk to them again or whatever), and then -- well, then there was this. he's not sure how it started, exactly, he's pretty sure Bruce disapproves, but whatever. it's surprisingly good]

[ ... even if it means getting stuck watching The Notebook. which, he's going to groan, now, thank you, because that's where he assumes this is going] Please tell me you're not going with something Nicholas Sparks.

[She laughs a bit, before shaking her head as she resettles and reaches for the remote.]

No, no Nicholas Sparks. I'm not that much of a sadist. But it is a sweeping romance that I just haven't had the chance to see yet.

[Her busy schedule doesn't really allow for too much movie time.]

Any hope for a rom-com? Or is it just sweeping romance?

[really, the lady doth protest too much, either way. he's required, as a man, to bitch and moan and groan about romance movies, but he actually doesn't mind them. there are worse things they could be watching]

Not a rom com, sorry.

[She cues up Loving, because romance with a side of social justice is ... her jam. This is the girl you've gotten involved with.]

But I'm pretty sure I have Clueless around here somewhere if you want to use it as a palette cleanser after.

[hey, you can do romance and social justice and have it be a rom-com. Legally Blonde totally ticks all those boxes, right?]

[but at any rate, Dick seems to consider this for a moment before ultimately shrugging] If I need it, sure. [but again with the part where he's just bitching to bitch. he'll probably enjoy the movie, no Clueless chaser needed]

[That is true. Never dismiss the power of Legally Blonde. But that being said, she'll hit play with a happy nod, before settling in for what is actually a really good movie about a couple who just wanted to be in love, while everyone else around them were dicks about it.

And there's popcorn.]

[Dick is quiet for awhile, just being close and watching the movie and occasionally grabbing some popcorn. at some point, however, and in one of the quieter moments of the movie, where neither of them will miss much if they get to talking, he breaks the silence, albeit tentatively]

You know, this is kinda -- this could have been me. [sure, he passes for your generic white guy, but] You know the Romani were slaves in Romania up until, like, the 1850s, and people here still don't like us much. [fuck you, comics writers, for on and off ignoring his heritage]

[She glances over for a moment, surprised at first, but then he begins to explain and understanding dawns on her.]

It makes no sense to me. I really feel like people forget what America was supposed to be, at times, when it's not fitting their own agenda.

People do that with a lot of stuff. [America. the Bible, if those God and Jesus fellows are your jam. and so on and so forth] It kinda sucks, but -- yeah, there you go. You're dating a 'gypsy'. Congrats?

[She gives a small shrug, because she's not sure that congratulations are in order, necessarily, but as she turns to face him, she frowns curiously.]

Did you think that would change anything?

No? [no, seriously, he didn't. the conversation just started getting a little too uncomfortable for his tastes, his heritage not something he's ashamed of but something he's learned to play close to the vest, like his secret identity, and so he just kept running with it. it turns into a joke, if you keep playing it up. congratulations, you're the 100th customer! you win a prize! ... or something] Like seriously, no, but ...

No, I get it.

[Not in a huge sense, because white girl, but social justice is kind of her thing, so she's informed enough to understand what he's getting at.]

But I'm glad you told me.

[If for no other reason than she's glad that he felt comfortable enough sharing it, which means he trusts her, and that is a good feeling.]

[Dick relaxes a little, glad this isn't going to turn into an argument over his inability to shut up, sometimes, and nods once, twice, more times than is necessary] Yeah, sure. [a beat] And thanks. [for not taking him the wrong way, for not freaking out, whatever]

Anytime.

[And she does mean that. She shifts to settle against him a little more, resting her head against his shoulder as her attention returns to the movie.]

[Dick shifts, too, tilting his head to rest against hers as he lapses back into silence, movie picking up again. he holds her like that, more or less, until a few minutes beyond its end, as he digests, and then:] Okay, I think we're good on the palette cleanser. [which is to say he doesn't need it. that was good]

Good.

[She smiles a bit as she looks up at him.]

But that does mean we have some newly freed time. Whatever will we do with it?

[Laurel Lance: Terrible at Flirting, so not the good kind of terrible flirt.]

Hm. [covering his mouth with a hand, he proceeds to look mock-thoughtful. the expression remains, even when he pulls his hand away again] I don't know. [a beat] I might have a couple of ideas, but ... [but they might not be very good ones]

[ ... look, if they're doing the whole bad flirting, he's totally going all in]

[As well he should, because she laughs before holding out her hands in front of her.]

I am open to all suggestions.

[Even the bad ones. Let's put them out there.]

Weeeeeeellllll ... [he makes a show of stretching, of putting his arm around her -- or readjusting his arm around her, anyway. still, he's going for the old, bad yawn and cuddle move] I could maybe do this ... [and that said and done, he's going to lean in to kiss her if she'll let him]

[Oh she will definitely let him. In fact, she was very much hoping that this was where his line of thought was going, so she curls into him with a smile, one hand coming up to brush against his cheek.]

[he hums at the touch, pleased by it, and endeavors to pull her that much closer. it's probably a physical impossibility, at this point, mind, without her ending up in his lap, but -- yeah, okay, he wouldn't mind that, if that's where this ends up going. either way, this is good]

[Laps are good. Laurel is totally okay with being in his lap, and she slides her way over so that she's straddling his waist and winds her arms around his neck.]

[Dick makes another pleased sound, and continues to kiss her for several seconds. when he finally needs to come up for air, he stays close, his forehead pressed against hers, his eyes closed and a smile on his lips]

[after a beat, though, that smile turns to a smirk, and softly, he offers:] You know, I used to be an acrobat ... [he still is, the way he moves while fighting as Nightwing, but that's not the point. the point he's making is that they could have some really acrobatic sex, never mind the fact that he's (about half) teasing, building on the whole bad pickup lines portion of the evening]

[She laughs a bit at that, because while she was aware of his past, she can imagine where his mind was going there.]

I remember. I take it you have some suggestions?

[he tilts his head one way, then another, forehead still brushing hers]

I could think of a few things, depending on how committed to Sparkle Motion you wanna get, yeah. [he could also think of some straight, vanilla things, if she's actually, honestly into going here]
