It's just not an average day in Chicago if there isn't another baby Wanderer walking around encasing people in ice. Ava catches sight of the unfortunate incident and ... well, whoops. It doesn't take her long to sprint the few feet to where Thomas is standing and start waving her hands.

"Whoa whoa whoa - stop panicking!"

Because that is step one to getting a handle on your rift power.

"Stop panicking? You really think that's a possibility?! I just shot ICE from my FINGERS!"

"Yes. Because you're panicking." She sighs softly before moving forward and reaching out to place her hands on his shoulders so that she's looking him in the eye. Granted, from a much lower vantage point, but still. "It's your rift power. It's triggered by your emotions. You control your emotions, you control the ice."

"What the hell is a rift power?"

"It's things Wanderers like you get when you fall through a rift." That's the simple version that makes no sense. She pauses for a moment, before shaking her head. "Look, I'll explain more later but right now, defrosting first, rambling later."

[rungreenierun]

"Okay, fine, how do I defrost?" He was frustrated but willing to at least not freeze half of the city.

"You breathe. Keep calm and control your emotions. If panic makes you freeze, then calm will make you unfreeze." She continues to give him a cool look. "Just focus."

He lets out a deep, shaky breath. His hands are shaking nervously, but he gets a few relaxing breaths out. "I think... I think I'm calming down..."

Ava can pick up on that calm, and she decides to try and take it to the next level. Her empath powers don't really lend themselves to positive feelings, what with being a demon and all, but she knows enough about people to know how to help them calm down.

"Here," she says gently, holding one hand out to him. "Take my hand."

Unsure, he lets her take it, his eyes glued to his hand to make sure he didn't suddenly freeze her hand off or something. She was warm though to his touch. "okay, now what," he said, his eyes still glued to them

In fact, she is far warmer than a human should be, though he might easily attribute that to his newly cold hands. "Now focus. Relax. As long as I've got your hand, nothing can hurt you."

"That's a mighty fine skill. Holding a guys hand and protecting him from anything that could attack." He gave a laugh, not totally convinced.

She gives him a bit of a look, before rolling her eyes. "I'm tougher than I look. Now are you going to do it or not?"

He nodded, closing his eyes a moment and really trying to focus. The frozen man started to thaw as he worked. When he was out of the ice, he flopped over, panting for breath.

Ava watches the entire time, before grinning and shaking his arm excitedly. "Ah! See!?! You did it!"

"I still don't really know what I did... but sure?"

[thebeatofherheart]

She sighs, before turning to face him again. "You fell through a rift. A hole in time and space. Every time that happens, the rift changes you a little bit. In the case of you, it gave you ice powers."

"Is there a way I can go back through it and not have these, because I really, probably should not be given powers at all."

[thebeatofherheart]

"Nope. Sorry. The Rift is kind of a one-way thing."

[rungreenierun]

"That's not possible. Physic wise, there is always a way to reverse the strand."

[thebeatofherheart]

"Rifts are holes in the universe. I don't think physics has a really good explanation for how they work yet." She's just sayin'. "That being said, the rifts do take people away too. But they don't take them home, they just take them ... somewhere else."

[rungreenierun]

"... and if I couldn't be freaking out enough, that right there would shucken do it."

She sighs softly, before nodding and patting his shoulder gently. "Come on. I'll buy you an ice cream. You'll feel better - temporarily anyway."

He just blinked. "... are you serious?"

Ava stares back at him dubiously. "I never joke about ice cream."
