It's the place where Derek grew up (in more ways than one), the place where he gained and lost so much at once, and the place where the ghosts of his failures will always linger around every corner. But with Peter locked away, Scott's pack moving on to college and Cora off doing whatever it is that Cora does, there's nothing to tether him to the streets he used to know better than he knew himself.
(In the end, that might be part of the problem. Derek knows himself now, the good and the bad, and there's no need to find something familiar to cling to. He doesn't need the past to tell himself who he is, he's no longer the stupid boy who let his family die. He's more than that, and it's somewhere in that realization that he learns he needs more than Beacon Hills.
He needs something new.)
So he leaves, and he drives, eventually he stops somewhere in the hills of Virginia, where the trees are different but still remind him of home in their own way. He gets restless a lot more easily than he used to, the wolf that sits under his skin wanting to stretch and run, and he's more than happy to indulge it. He finds a quiet place to shift, replacing his clothes with fur and dashing through the trees that for most would consider a break-neck pace but for him it almost felt like a leisurely stroll. This form was made to run, and he's never been one to fight his instincts.
Eventually he makes his way back around again, and thankfully he at least has pants on before he hears the sound. It's a snap of twigs, somewhere in the distance, and while he still reaches for his shirt, he inches back, into the tree line and out of view, waiting to see what was coming his way.
His leather jacket is still draped across a stump, however. He knew he was forgetting something.]

[Mystic Falls will (hopefully) not burn down in the meantime.]
[With autumn starting to be in full swing, Elena has her coat drawn around her tightly to keep the chill in the air out. Whenever she comes to a small pile of leaves that have prematurely fallen to the ground, she gives them a little kick and sends them scattering. She doesn't just stare at her feet, however, that's too easy of a way to walk into a tree and notices the leather jacket on the stump long before she's close to it. So much for being alone.]
[She glances around, looking along the treeline for signs of another person and strains her ears to hear. She almost thinks to call out, but thinks better of it. There's no telling who is out there. Which means she should probably turn around and head back the way she came while the Hide and Seek Champ have their fun. Instead, she does the exact opposite and heads over to the stump to look at the jacket a little closer.]

By appearing right behind her and probably scaring the crap out of her. Some things never really change.]
If you're looking to steal it, it probably went out of style twenty years ago.
[Just FYI. But he's totally teasing, and that's clear on his face when she turns around.]
