It could be worse, Diego figures. It could be Five trying to talk to him about Lila again....that has historically gone poorly and knowing now that Five was the one who killed Lila's parents well it put a lot of pieces together. And as complicated as it all was...he loved Lila, for better or for worse.
"Lila...is complicated."
It's putting it lightly but it had been hard enough telling Luther how he felt about the woman, despite everything they had put one another through. But she had left. Maybe that makes sense. She just found out the person who she thought was her mother was just using her as a tool -- if there's anything he can relate to, it's that feeling.
"But I couldn't let Luther hurt her."
no subject
She deserved a chance to go and figure out her own life. And Allison now knows better than to ever try and rumor her again.
"And I think after what went down with Vanya, we should know better than to follow Luther's first instinct on these things." At least until he proves he can use those first instincts wisely.
But it was nice. Seeing Diego caring about someone. She missed the time when he was with Patch, so it's good to know that he's not holding himself back from that.

"She's done some messed up stuff -- but she just wanted to make the Handler happy -- how can I hold that against her?"
Someone who had been so desperate most of his life for their father's approval? Who even meeting Reginald in the past....Reginald still had his number, and still found him lacking.
"It makes me wonder what happened to the others one like her and us -- did they all end up being used as tools too?"
no subject
She never really gave much thought to the other kids like them out there. They clearly weren't sold to Hargreeves like their mothers did them. But seeing Lila, hearing her story, makes her wonder if ignoring the situations powered children like them were put in were the best choice they could have made.
"Maybe we should try and find them. I bet Dad kept track of them all, even if he didn't get them. We could have a Powered Kids Support Group."
no subject
"It might not be a bad idea to track them down, to find them before they find us."
Little does he know that when they go back in time....they'll find some of the others in their place, but that's future Diego and Allison to worry about it. Right now...they just have some downtime until they go home and it all goes to crap.
no subject
"I hope some of them got to have normal lives. To do normal kid things, you know?" She shakes her head. "I never knew how much we missed until I had Claire. Just ... watching her go to school and hang out with her friends. Sometimes I really wish we had gotten the chance to be kids."
no subject
"It must of been hard building a life here for yourself without her."
She knows Claire loved Raymond....but to be away from her daughter like that? That must have felt impossibly difficult at times. He literally can't imagine, not being a father himself and all.
But he can try and empathize.

Then, a wistful expression crosses her face as she smiles.
"I love Ray a lot though. I think he's the first person I ever loved who I never tried to manipulate or rumor into loving me. Sometimes I really wish he could have met her because he would have adored her."
Because of course he would have. She's part of Allison.
no subject
"Hey, you didn't have to manipulate us into loving you," He points out gently. Not that it's the same as romantic love, but just saying. Your family loves you, Allison, even if they're a whole ass mess most of the time at showing it.
But in this moment he's less messy and reaches out to take his sister's hand, squeezing it. For all his sharp edges, Diego's pretty soft when it comes to the people who matter to him.
"I'm sorry you can't introduce them though. That you have to choose."
no subject
And she's incredibly grateful for that, even if sometimes she probably didn't deserve it. She's done a lot of growing in the last two years, trying to be a better person than the arrogant, narcissistic person she used to be. And her family's been there for her regardless.
She squeezes his hand back.
"Yeah. That part sucks. But going home means you guys get to finally meet her too. And let me tell you when that happens, she's going to be over the moon."
no subject
"I can't wait to meet her."
And he means that sincerely. He may have been shitty to Allison about her divorce when they all came home for their dad's funeral, but he likes to think he's done some growing up too. He's not quite as angry, as volatile as he was before. He'll always be him -- but that doesn't mean he has to be an asshole. Not to the people he actually gives a shit about.
"Did you tell her about us?"
no subject
Sharing her family with her daughter was her own way of keeping her family in her life, no matter how far she ran away. She always hoped that one day, they would have reason to come together again - a good, safe reason - and Claire would get to meet them all, but things got complicated.
She needs to make that a priority now.
"She got to hear all our big hero adventures."
no subject
"Oh yeah? Did she have a favorite out of us?"
Seems like a dangerous question to ask, but Diego just can't help himself. He hasn't even met the kid yet and he already wants to be the favorite uncle, go figure.
Everything's a competition with this one.
no subject
Because if she's really honest, it's probably Luther, just from Allison's own personal bias. It likely came through in the stories she told, even if it wasn't intentional. And Diego doesn't need to have a bigger head than he already does.
"But her favorite adventure was the museum robbery."
no subject
"Probably not."
Because even he knows the answer is probably Luther and the eternal number two doesn't need that particular set of insecurities let loose right now. Especially not when they're having a moment.
Those don't happen a lot.
"Girl's got good taste -- that was a good one."
no subject
They did have some good memories, even if they weren't ideal. And looking out over the farm yard with the latest battle they survived, she can't say she's surprised that they've continued to come out ahead, for the most part.
"We always did make a pretty good team, when we could manage to work together."
no subject
They weren't ideal -- but they weren't all bad. Granted...there was a lot bad too, there was a reason everyone but Luther left, of course, but it could have been worse too. There were some good memories, sometimes it's nice to focus on those instead of the bad ones.
Like he said to Lila, he knows what it feels like to love dangerous people, but they love him back.
"We do. I'd say we're getting better at that -- working together. At least when it counts."
no subject
They're better at balancing who they are as adults, which only bodes well for them in the future. She's not sure they're bound for a life fighting crime when they return to 2019, but maybe they won't only see each other at funerals.
