[this is a blatant cop out because the narration really wants them to fight but, for the life of her, cannot come up with a good starter]

[She walks into the station, expecting the police to greet her with bullets and batons, but in the end there's only a man in red leather, armor covering his eyes. The Devil of Hell's Kitchen.

Claire.

She asked her not to call, and she called. And she already knows that this is going to hurt. Her hands curl into fists for a moment, before she steps forward, ready for whatever's going to come at her.]

So. You're gonna play Kilgrave's human shield? I gotta give him points - this wasn't what I was expecting.

Not human shield.

[he's here to incapacitate her. Kilgrave told him to bring her to him alive, and that's what he's planning on doing, as much as he really doesn't want to. he doesn't want to be here. he doesn't want to be doing this. he can't stop himself. at least he didn't ask him to kill her, thank God. thank God. that would be worse]

[but at any rate, with a shuddering breath, he reaches for his batons. an odd moment of pause follows, when he has them in hand (he's feeling out the room with his senses, judging distance, placement of things around them), and then he tosses one in her direction. it'll be an easy dodge, but he's not aiming for her. he's planning on ricocheting the stick off the wall and into her head from behind]

[and if we're rolling for this because IDEK anymore ... 19]

[The baton grazes her as it ricochets around again, and she winces as it collides (18), but she's not going to let it get to her. If all he's going to do is bruise her, then she can live with that. She just doesn't want to have to kill him.]

So what did he say?

[Matt takes a handful of steps forward, throwing the other baton (10). whether or not it connects, he doesn't stop, he just keeps stalking towards her. he'd rather do this with his fists, anyway]

I'm supposed to bring you in. [a beat] He didn't tell me what condition you were supposed to be in, though. [and he plans on capitalizing on that. he's pretty sure she won't go down unless he puts her down, but he won't leave her eating her dinner through a straw if he can help it]

[That one she dodges easily (19), and she stands her ground, picking apart the words in her head. Being taken to Kilgrave is what she wants, and she knows that she could probably get to it easily by surrendering now, but that would likely give the gambit away. She's not really one for overplaying her hand right now.]

Guess I better make this look good, then.

[And once he's close enough she'll immediately throw out a punch at about half-strength - she doesn't want to cause him permanent damage either (1). Though really it just looks like she isn't even trying.]

[he feels it coming -- or at least expects it. either way, he brings up an arm to catch hers, to keep the hit from connecting by sweeping it out of the way (16) and then throws a punch of his own, with his other hand, aimed for her ribs (9). he doesn't say anything. turns out the Devil of Hell's Kitchen isn't a big talker]

[It's cool. She's not really a big talker when it comes to punching things, either. She comes up to try and block the punch, but it just slips past her (5), catching her hard, but not hard enough. She knows she's going to need to provoke him more to make this look good, and her usual method of just throwing people around probably isn't going to cut it.

Unfortunately, that's the way she knows how to fight, so she's just going to keep on swinging once at his head (19), and again with a solid knee to the stomach (19).]

[the force of the first hit is enough to send his head snapping to one side with a grunt (5). he seems to get a sense that she's going to follow up on that, however, and so he turns to one side, putting his shoulder to her, letting that knee hit empty space where he was standing (20). he shifts back, throwing a cross hook with his other hand as he does so (12)]

[The cross-hook hits hard (5), and she stumbles back a bit, one hand coming up to brush at the corner of the mouth. She's starting to get mad, but she knows that Daredevil doesn't deserve her ire here. She just needs to get him to take her to Kilgrave.

She lashes out again, swinging close for what's hopefully a hard hit (11) and another one that swings wide that likely won't hit (2).]

[the first swing does hit home and just as hard as she hoped (6). he half-curls in on himself as a result, as a reflex that becomes a reaction, a duck, as she takes another swing at him, letting it pass overhead harmlessly (11). when he rights himself fully, he bares his teeth and then drops fluidly into a crouch, kicking out one foot, hoping to take her feet out from under her (14). if she's on her back, it'll make it that much harder for him to punch him, he figures]

[That would be the theory, yes. She goes down hard, landing on her back with a groan as she tries to catch the wind that seems to have been ripped from her (4). It takes her a moment to try and regain herself, and while she can't punch him, she will take advantage of her position and pump her legs up until his stomach so that she can shove him back and get to her feet (13).]

[he figures she's not just going to sit there while he rains a flurry of kicks down on him, and so, unfortunately for Jessica, he knows the kick is coming. he catches her feet (18) and shoves them aside, then takes a step to one side, practically fluid, to aim a kick of his own at her ribs (17)]

[She uses that momentum to try and roll away but she doesn't get far enough to miss the first kick (15), catching her just under her ribs and giving her enough force to get the rest of the way, even if it hurts. She grits her teeth as she starts to push up onto her feet again and makes a fist again.]

You really sure about this? Cuz I can do this all day.

So could I. [even if he doesn't want to] You could always do us both a favor and stand down. [he's not sure that would make any of this any better, honestly, but at least he could stop beating the shit out of her if she surrendered]

Yeah. I'm gonna go with no. If I'm going up against Kilgrave, I'm going to do it on my terms, not his.

[She pauses for a moment, before bringing her fists back up again.

[You want me to go quietly, you're gonna have to shut me up.

You asked for it. [why are you making him do this, Jessica?]

[not that he can really ask that, and so, instead, he just hesitates for an instant before coming at her again. what looks like a direct charge turns out to be a feint, however, as he veers off before he gets close, using his momentum to vault up onto one of the desks nearby. he jumps off of it, when he's reached the top, throwing himself and a punch at her, hoping that extra force and the fact that she might not be expecting him to come in from the side will help (14).]

[Nope, she's paying attention now and she side steps the blow easily (16), using her momentum to try and bring a blow down against his back but she likely misses wildly (3).]

[she does, in fact, as he keeps going a couple of steps once he comes down to get out of her range (17). he turns back to face her, following that, but rather than come at her again, he waits, albeit restlessly, for her to come at him, hoping to use momentum against her when she does]

[She figures that it would come to this and Kilgrave is definitely her end goal so he's going to have to take her in eventually.

But for now, she's going to charge at him wildly, and maybe she can make it seem plausible enough for him to take her down (8).]

[he can, for lack of better wording, see her coming a mile away, and so he steps out of her path (12). he's quick to rock back, however, to bring his elbow down, hoping to catch her between the shoulders and force her down (15). if and when he does, he's probably going to start punching her until she stops moving]

[sorry, Jessica]

[She takes the hits and drops to the ground, her arms coming up to protect her face, taking each of the hits until she finally stills, going limp and letting him take her to Kilgrave.]

[after a handful of extra hits, just for good measure, Matt rolls off of her and gets to his feet. he hesitates a moment, looking down at her, and then, with a shuddering breath out, he moves to gather his batons before coming back, bending to grab one of her arms, hauling her up onto his shoulders. (it helps that she's tiny.) and that done, yes, he's going to take her to Kilgrave, as ordered]

[later, when this is over and assuming she survives and Kilgrave doesn't tell him to go eat a bullet, he'll have to find her again, apologize. he never wanted this]

[It's okay, Matt. She's got this covered. She's the appropriate amount of sack of potatoes over his shoulder, not trying to make things easy for him, but not trying to make them harder either. She's hoping that this is the extent of the orders and she can tell him to run and get out of range before Kilgrave can issue another order.]

[and so, Matt hauls her off to Kilgrave, who, surprise muse with no journal tiems, gets to his feet when Matt enters] You did it. [a beat] You actually did it. Oh, this is brilliant. I'll be honest, I was half-hoping she'd do us all a favor and put you out of your misery, but this is so much better. Well done!

[Matt says nothing, and some of Kilgrave's glee fades. he makes an impatient gesture at Matt] What are you waiting for, then? Set her down. [and so Matt moves to deposit her somewhere nearby]
