It changed all of them, not just Cora and Peter. You can't feel that kind of loss without having it change you. Cora was an omega. Peter trapped himself in his own mind. Derek drowned himself in guilt and self-loathing until he barely had enough self-worth to get out of bed in the morning. In the end, they all channeled that anger and loss into a quest for power, and while Cora's and Derek's were less destructive than Peter's was, it all came from the same place.

It's why they still understand him, even if they don't want to. Even if they wish to hate him for what they lost, they're still family, which means Peter will still always be a part of them - for better or for worse.
